In this chansonnette comique, the female athlete wants to join the circus, which was another favoured form of entertainment in nineteenth-century Paris. Alcazar star Victorine Demay (ca. 1843–1888) possessed, “a harmonious voice… uniquely biting and cutting, that enters in your ear with the sharpness of a bullet”(Lemaître, 1888) and this popular song was part of her repertoire.
Le cirque était un autre genre de divertissement très prisé à Paris au XIXe siècle. Dans cette chansonnette comique, créée par Mme Demay, une femme athlète cherche à être engagée dans un cirque. On disait de Victorine Demay (ca. 1843–1888), vedette de l’Alcazar, qu’elle possédait « une voix bien timbrée..., singulièrement mordante et coupante qui vous entre dans l’oreille avec la netteté d’une balle à pointe d’acier » (Lemaître, 1888).
