Count Marco Aurelio Marliani (1805–1849) wrote the leading role in his first opera, Il bravo (1834), for his student, Italian soprano Julia (Giulia) Grisi (1811–1869), prima donna at the Théâtre Italien. An accomplished singing actress, Grisi excelled in passionate roles, such as Norma, Donna Anna, and Semiramis. Marliani’s romance provides a glimpse of Grisi’s dramatic vocal style, with short declamatory phrases in the singer’s middle register, and unprepared leaps to the high notes when the speaker calls his beloved’s name (“Rose”).

Le comte Marc-Aurèle Marliani (1805–1849) a écrit le rôle principal de son premier opéra, Il bravo (1834), pour son étudiante, la soprano italienne Julia (Giulia) Grisi (1811–1869), prima donna au Théâtre-Italien. Tragédienne lyrique accomplie, Grisi excellait dans l’interprétation de personnages passionnés tels Norma, Donna Anna et Sémiramis. Cette romance de Marliani nous donne un aperçu du style dramatique de Grisi, avec de courtes phrases récitées dans le registre médian de la voix et des sauts imprévus vers l’aigu lorsque l’interprète prononce le nom de sa bien-aimée : Rose.
