The child's instructor, or Picture alphabet. Glasgow : Published and sold, wholesale, by Lumsden & Son., [ca. 1815?]
Publisher:
Published and sold, wholesale, by Lumsden & Son., [ca. 1815?]
Notes:
  • At foot of title: Price Twopence.
  • Roscoe & Brimmell note watermark in one copy with date "181- ... [perhaps] 1812 or 1819"; Pierpont Morgan Library records watermark "RT & Co" in three of its five copies, with various dates: 181-, 1811, and 1815. One of two Brown University copies has the RT & Co watermark with date 1812.
  • Title page printed on verso of first leaf. Roscoe & Brimmell describe "14 or 16 leaves", with the t.p. on "verso of the front wrapper or on the verso of the first free leaf"; but this almost certainly points only to binding variants, some copies having the first and last leaves pasted down, as in two Pierpont Morgan copies.
  • Wood engraving of Stanhope printing press with "Hedderwick printer, Glasgow" on p. [31].
  • Although Hugo attributes some illustrations to Bewick, "[t]he most that can be said is that some of the woodcuts are copied after him or produced under his influence, and may have been done in his workshop" (Roscoe & Brimmell).
  • First sentence: "Good girls and good boys prefer books to toys, and with the cock rise to read and grow wise."
  • Includes 29 woodcuts.

  • Copy in McGill Library's Rare Books and Special Collections: letters E,G,J,K & S are copied from Bewick, according to Roscoe. Buff pictorial wrappers, wood engraving on back & front wrappers.
