Description:
The song references the subject matter of Meyerbeer’s popular grand opéra Les Huguenots (1836), with allusions to King Charles IX and the eve of “Saint Barthélemy,” and its dedication to Adolphe Nourrit (1802–1839), the tenor who created the role of Raoul, a young Huguenot who falls in love with the Catholic Valentine. The St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre led to the killing of thousands of Huguenots (Protestants) in Paris in 1572.

Cette balade fait référence au grand opéra célèbre de Meyerbeer, Les Huguenots (1836), avec ses allusions au roi Charles IX ainsi qu’à la veille de la Saint-Barthélemy et sa dédicace à Adolphe Nourrit (1802–1839), le ténor qui créa le rôle de Raoul, un jeune huguenot qui tombe amoureux d’une catholique, Valentine.
