Saturday 23^rd[.] This Morning about 11 o'Clock the Potties arrived – they debarked and Decampt I mean encampt on the little Island near this fort[.] Perronne having boasted of having Come here merely through spite to this Company and of having traded 40 Skins in the Bustard Island previous to His arrival M^r Finlay wrote him a letter enquiring into the truth of this report but he did not return an answer pretending that He Could not understand the letter because it wrote in English[.] M^r Finlay then dispatched Frisée down a second time desiring Perronne to meet him about half way so as to get an explanation of the letter but he did not understand this neither – therefore Seeing it impossible to Chase Perronne out of his lurking hole M^r Finlay & I went down to have look of this Cowardly beast[.] M^r Finlay while he explained his letter and the motives of his interview trembled with anger – but while Perronne denied every word of the Charge laid against him in the most abject manner every limb of him trembled with fear[.] He had taken M^r Finlay's letter, the meaning of which was Couched on pretty severe terms, to be a Challenge and his appearance to be Death[.] Such is the manner in which Perronne Shewed the Spite of which he boasted before his arrival[.]

Sunday 24^th[.] This morning M^r Finlay Set out for Lac Lapluie and Grand Portage[.] Last night he gave a Large Keg to the Montagners at their Chiefs request in order to incite them to behave well during the Summer but as soon as he was out of sight they went to the Potties to take Credits[.] However partly by persuation and partly by giving them a few more Credits which I at first refused I believed I Kept them from taking many Credits – if I have not I shall at any rate try and perhaps prevent their paying their Credits there[.] I need not here tell the reason of giving them more Credits it Ought to be plain enough without an explanation[.]
