MFTP #0028 18 Thursday 15th January 1801[.] The eight Sledges came home with four Cows[.] [T]his is a very mild day Snowed a little in the morning. Danni[s] finished a Sort of a Cariole he has made for me[.] Mr Harmon returned with the people, he saw a great many buffaloes he says[.] Friday 16th[.] I Sett off with the men that went for meat, to See what was going on there (at the hunters) & to speake to the Hunters to encourage them, we got there Soon after midday, the Indians were out hunting but kill'd nothing they say the Buffaloe are going farther off owing to the extremely mild weather. I brought each of the hunters a little Rum with which they got drunk; the distance from the Fort to go there may be about 18 Miles, but the roads are very fine & level. Amlin went off home[.] Saturday 17th[.] We got back to the Fort about half past two oClock 2 P.M. with 4 & half Cows[.] I took L'Heureux home with me as they do not furnish, even the three others to haul[.] [I]t snowed most part of the day which made the roads heavy[.] Sunday 18th[.] A fine day, being Sunday I let the men rest themselves[.] La Frenier came from the Ducharms lodge who have kill'd he Says 21 Cows, they are near the white mud river[.] I am bothered (plagued) with a parcel of invalides here at the Fort who cannot go even for meat, vizt – Boiselle, La Comble, Chauvin, & now Plante is unwell[.] [T]he two Iroquois are here still they are busy making snow shoes & Sledges. Monday 19th[.] I Sent off Six Sledges to the Ducharms, & two to our Indian Hunters, La Frenier is looking for wood to make Sledges & Snow Shoes; blew a hard gale from the Southward but not cold, gave medecines to Plante & Boiselle, who are attacked with the same disorder tho in different stages[.] Teusday 20th[.] A very fine day[.] [T]he people that I Sent to Ducharms returned well loaded with Meat[.] The Two Iroquois went off to go to the Ducharms[.] La Comble & Boiselle are both very unwell. Wednessday 21st[.] Quite Mild[.] I Sent off the people for meat to the Ducharms[.] La France & Cadien came here from the Montaigne des Oiseaux[,] they brought me a Roll of Tobacco & a keg of H.Wines[.] I engaged La France for two years & Cadien for three, the ordinary wages of the Post, but I promised each a Gun & Horse, one of them (Cadien) being free at the Grand Portage. Thursday 22d[.] It's a quite warm day, thaws a great deal, round the Fort[.] [T]he people came home with meat, & La France & Frisé went with 4 Sledges to Ducharms, as Mr Perigné told La France & Cadian to take two Sledges load down with them, Forsier came from our Indian Hunters with a Cow[.] [T]he two Iroquois that were here new years day came to the Fort, they have very little dryed meat & nothing else, they found Mr Montour's Mare that he lost last fall on his way to Fort des Prairie[.] [17] L E G E N D : |
