Abstract

This journal was written by North West Company clerk Norman McLeod at Alexandria, from 15 November 1800 to 4 June 1801. McLeod’s account of daily life and trade at Fort Dauphin emphasizes the North West Company’s intense rivalry with the Hudson's Bay and XY companies. The author explains how the commercial success of the companies is increasingly contingent on goods (especially liquor) in the competitive trading for pelts with the local peoples. McLeod also describes the Swan River region and expresses his fear of starvation and the cold weather.

Ce journal, qui couvre la période du 15 novembre 1800 au 4 juin 1801, fut tenu à Alexandria par Norman McLeod, un commis pour la Compagnie du Nord Ouest. McLeod y décrit la région qui entoure la rivière Swan ainsi que la vie quotidienne et la traite des fourrures au Fort Dauphin, où la rivalité avec la Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson et la Compagnie XY se fait lourdement ressentir. Il fait mention du commerce de marchandises, surtout de l'alcool, afin de marchander avec les Indiens et de supplanter les compagnies rivales. L'auteur exprime aussi ses craintes envers la famine et le froid.
