MFTP #0028 17 Sunday 11th January 1801[.] A very fine Mild day[.] [O]ne of the young men that came here last evening went down to the Elbow for Some of the men from there to go out with them with Rum &c. [T]he Boeuf Blanc set off. [B]lew very fresh towards evening. Monday 12th[.] Sent all the people for meat, Mr Harmon having a curiosity to see the Buffaloe went with them, indeed I wished him to go & see how the Men act there, being apprehensive they destroy a great deal in feeding their Dogs. The Boeuf blanc came back & brought me every thing I had given him for his horse he being almost inconsolate for having Sold him[.] [N]ot wishing to give him up the Horse I gave him a little Horse I had & kept the Gartering, Cloth & Tobacco in lieu of the Horse I give him, by which means the Horse does not cost the 6d by ten Beavers value what I originally gave him. [T]wo of Mr Sutherland's men came here on their way out to the Indians[,] they brought me a letter & a Book from their Mater, in the first he gives me a pressing invitation to go see him. [T]he Iroquois belonging to the XY came here late in the evening & along with them two of ours, they say they are to go for their effects to the River Qui appelle & that afterwards they intend going to Fort Des Prairies, I told our's that I did not like their remaining with the others, so they intend Setting off from this a hunting[.] Teusday 13th[.] The XY Iroquois went off to the River Qui appelle[.] I wrote a very few lines to Mr McDonell informing him of his Iroquois being here & telling him I wished he could come up & settle with them himself; as I have neither their A/C or engagements[.] Pierre & the other went off for their families & Baggage, the English went off with the young Indians, but an Indian who came here in the evening (Sagotimoh) tells us the Indians to whose tents they are gone have got no Skins, the Fort des Prairies people having lately been there en Derouine, the people came home with the Meat[.] Frisé & Roy came back having Staid their turn at the hunters[.] I Sold my fine Gun to one of our Iroquois he having none for two hundred livres with which I am to be Credited & debited to Ta hoatianta & Ōghiserōgo, especially the first[.] Wednesday 14th[.] A very fine Mild day[.] Shagotimoh gave me nine pieces of meat & a badger Skin for which I gave him a very little Keg of Rum, he went off as did the people for Meat[.] [T]he Red River Men came back from Swan River (Hamelin & George)[.] [17] L E G E N D : |
