MFTP #0028 19 Thursday 22nd January 1801 Continued[.] Petit Bled & Petit Sounan came here[,] they are come for people to go for meat to their Lodge, a good days march off[.] [T]he Buffaloe are going farther off very fast owing to the extraordinary mildness of the weather, people go days journeys without mittens, so very fine is the weather[.] I took a ride on horse back today of upwards of an hour without gloves & felt not the least cold. Cadien is getting himself tatooed by La Frenier, as has already Boiselle[.] Friday 23d[.] I Sent the people off for the remainder of the Meat that is at the Ducharms as they are to pitch off after the Buffaloe[.] La France & Frisé came back before day as La France wishes to get tatooed[.] This has been a very fine Mild day as usual[.] Saturday 24th[.] The Petit Bled went off[,] the Sounant waits to go along with the Men tomorrow, the people came back with the last of the meat from the Ducharms, the two Iroquois came back with them as they are to go with the two Ignaces to Red Deers River[.] Sunday 25th[.] Still warm weather[.] I Sent eight Sledges off with the Sounant[.] John Luke & Gibault arrived from Jacco Finlay's with 1½ Rolls S.T. Tobacco & a few other articles[.] I am Sorry to learn he does very little there he has now but two hundred & thirteen Skins that is traded Beaver Plus[.] La France & Cadian went off with a Cow I Sent Mr Perigné[.] La Fenier went off for the River Qui Appelle[,] I wrote Mr McD. by him[.] I took a ride in my Cariole & Dogs today. Monday 26th[.] Fine weather, got cloudy in the afternoon[.] The 4 Iroquois went off for River la Biche[.] I wrote Mr McGillis[.] Teusday 27th[.] Cloudy but mild weather[.] Collin & the men came back, the brought 40 Bladders grease a little pounded Meat & the rest of their loads were made up with Bosses & Depouilles[.] I Sent Girardin for Meat, he went off before day & came back at night[.] [T]he Hunters have pitched off after the Buffaloe but they see very few, & must go far off after them[.] Wednessday 28th[.] Fine weather[.] [T]he people went for meat[.] [O]ne of the old Pass au Travers Sons came here he tells us they have the load of 3 Sledges at their lodge of meat & Grease, he brought us a few bladders grease & a very little pounded meat, I gave him a little Rum to drink. Frisé came home with a Cow & a half on his two Sledges. Thursday 29th[.] Still as mild as usual[.] [T]he Indian went off & with him I sent Collin & 3 Sledges, the people came home with the Meat[.] The Buffaloe are going away very fast which makes me apprehensive that we must towards Spring have recourse to the little pounded meat & Grease that we have, & for which I should be extremely sorry[.] [18] L E G E N D : |
