never be effect'd without incurring Some expenses to the Company[.]

Saturday 14th[.] An Indian called the Brochet arrived from Lac Claire[.] This montagner came last Summer from Isle a la Crosse and wants to go there now but his Canoe is not good enough to bring him to his Journey's end[.] He has been Just now at the little Potties House and by his discourse I understand that he has promised Perronne to Guide him to Isle a la Crosse[.] I offered him 10 Skins for going with a letter to Mr Porter but he would not go any where but in the Athabasca River where I suppose Perronne and he have fixed upon a randezvous[.] I therefore sent St Germain along with him with Orders to wait Perronne at the Forks above Ponds (Old Fort[)] where it is impossible to pass without being seen[.] He is also to follow him to Portage La Loche and take any Montagner he may find from him[.] Gave the Brochet 3 Skins worth gratis – and Gave St Germain 10 measures Ammn and 2 fathoms of Tobacco to be given to Indians along the river if necessary[.] As I was returning from sending St Germain off Perronne threw himself in my way (for I did not throw myself in his way) Spoke to me and invited me to his Tent[.] He complained of lonesomeness and wished to have some books to read. I lent him 4 Volumes of the Amusemens des Dames[.] These will perhaps divert him from making more Schemes for his Escape – for which I think him very Shallow[.] La Viollette took 15 Ps of fish[.]

Sunday 15th[.] La Viollette caught 18 Ps of fish[.]

Monday 16th[.] St Germain returned, left the Brochet dans les Fourches and brought a Beaver and Bustard[.] He gives no reason for returning So Soon but is Sure that the Brochet will not Conduct Perronne[.]

Tuesday 17th[.] The Roche qui reluie's Slave arrived from Lac Claire and Set Out Soon after for Grand Marrais[.] Gave him 3 M Ammn for nothing & wrote a letter by him to Messrs: Stuart and Wentzel[.] La Viollette caught 6 ps of fish – in a piece of Net[.]

Wednesday 18th[.] Lafrenieres Comrade and his Brother arrived from Lac Claire as they alledge to Change a Gun – but in fact to Rodger their Sweethearts[.] They brought a letter from Mr Porter to which I wrote an Answer immediately and told the Indians to be gone that they might not let Perronne Know the news of the Bark River – but they refused to go away this day[.] St Germain has them under his Care at the Pointe aux Chiens[.] La Viollette did not visit his net as the wind blew hard[.]
