MFTP #0016 Orders as were apprehensive that the Potties who I suppose are at Our heels might do this for us and Consequently do the Company more hurt than the Cloathing could do them good[.] We Send you this Indian 6 Bales of Corrasse of 60lb each, & two Packtons of furs Containing 44 Beaver Skins, 2 Otters, 5 Bears, & 6 pichoux[.] On these bales and Packtons we have had the precaution to write N.W.Co to prevent the encroachment of Our hungry Opponents[.] We are in haste and must bid you adieu[.] Here we go myself Wentzel, D'os, Marciel & Dusablon. John Stuart Of the Meat which Mr Stuart mentions we received but 5 Bales and these 5 weigh only 36lb each[.] The R.Q.R's Byr Confesses to have eaten 1 bale but he does not speak of having broken upon the Others[.] Friday 5th[.] Gave the Roche qui reluie's Byr the Value of 35 Skins Gratis upon Conditon of his going with all the Crees whom he can find to pass the Summer with Mr Porter at Lac Claire[.] He made several Speeches and of Course received others in return[.] He was well pleased and went off[.] Saturday 6th[.] Snowed in the Evening[.] Sunday 7th[.] Blew like a Hurricane all this Day and began to Snow towards Evening[.] This Carried away the Batteaux from the Pointe au Chien although Laviollette and I secured in the best manner possible this morning[.] Monday 8th[.] This morning there was a foot of Snow on the Ground – more fell in the Course of the Day and in the Evening it froze to Such a Degree that the Marrais about the Fort were covered with Ice of half an Inch thick[.] In the midst of this Storm and Cold the Petit Rognon & his wife and Kewigiwache arrived before Perronne's with fresh Meat but St Germain who was near hand brought them here[.] When the Petit was last at Perronnes he promised it Seems to bring Eggs to make him Cakes, fresh meat to make him Grilliades and Green Skins to make Windows for his New House[.] The whole of the Cargo Amounts to one Skins worth rotten Eggs, 8 Do of fresh Meat and 3 Green Skins which the Rognon trad[ed] for rum[.] We asked him whether he Knew the Damn'd Rascal who brought Meat to Perronne under Cover of the Night some time ago[.] He answered He did not Know – we therefore desired him to enquired and at the Same time inform his Relations that the Buffaloe Head is for the Future to watch and sink or [48] L E G E N D : |
