Saturday 28 March 1800 Contd

some of their actions yet I have not against their Interest[.] Should you itch to shew your real, good nature &c. by making remarks you may make an Index for that purpose at the end of this Journal for I have taken care that you should not find an Inch of clean paper either at Top, bottom, or Margin of it, not from fear of your Arguments but through that of your not leaving me room enough to Confute them of, which last I by no means despair[.]

Sunday 29th[.] Late last night 9 Montagners arrived among whom is the Little Bird’s Son who made so much the Sob they paid this day [blank] Skins Credits in furs and 6 do in Mt Credits[.] The trade of this day is 19½ Beaver Skin, 6 do Br Stones, 8 do fresh Meat, 3 do pounded Meat, & 3 do old Irons[.]

Monday 30th[.] As we were going to bed last night J. La Cailles youngest brother in Law and Callumets Son arrived[.] Sent Callumet who has 60 skins 1 Small bit but none to Jacqueau's two Brothers in Law who have only 20 each[.] Joseph Bouche arrived[.] He & Cadien paid 31 Skins between them & traded 6 Ditto[.]

Tuesday 31st[.] Gave Credits to the whitefish's Son & Gendre they go to their Lands but promise to be back next winter[.] Gave the whitefish's Son for nothing, 1 awl, 1 firesteel, 1 Gun worm, 3 flints, 1 Commn Belt, 1 Horn Comb, 1 Hook, 1 Needle & ¾ fathom Rotten Tobacco[.] My reason for giving these Articles to this young Man is to Shew Such as go to Hudson's Bay that the Indians of this place are not pitiful[.] Gave the other a few triffles for nothing also[.] In the Evening Cantaras arrived from Pointe de Roches with three trains full of dried Troute[.] Several Montagners with Yabanedja, an old fellow, at their head asked this day for Credits in order to go to their Lands at the same time promising to be back next year[.] Told them that the usual excuse of those who went to their Lands was that there is no beaver on their Lands – that therefore there is no use in giving Credits to be paid in Carriboux Tongues, skins &c & very often not to be paid at all – that since the Montagners meant to leave this place there was no occasion to bring any Goods here next fall – that if any old Man like Yabanedja would Content himself with going to his Lands with only one of his sons he would get a few Credits but that one old fool was worse than ten young ones for each of them has no less than 4 or 5 Sons, 5 or 6 Gendres & 9 or 10 Nephews who must all follow him altho it is evident they could very well dispense with his Company – as well as we can[.] These and a few more remonstrances made them so much ashamed that they Consented to stay here about[.]

April Wednesday 1st[.] About 12 OClock Joseph Neau & Lebeau arrived out of Land – at the Same Picoté who went for
