March 1795

Tuesday 17th[.] La Graine & band came in & made the following presents La Graine 10 Buff. Robes, 12 fresh Tongues & 1 Blad. Grease[,] Gave him 7 Galls[.] Le Grand nez Junr 6 Sks[,] 5 Buff. Robes, 29 ps meat & Grease, gave him a large keg, a Shirt, hat & Chiefs feather[.] Le Gros Français son 5 Buff. Robes & 18 ps meat & Grease[,] Gave him 7 Galls[.] Le Rufien 13 Skins in Robes & 23 ps meat & Grease, Gave him 7 Galls[,] Kekekogouine 5 Buff. Robes & 10 ps meat & Grease; Gave him ½ a keg – each of them had more over two fioles Gratis[.] Skated on the River for the first time this Spring[.] Gadory & Houle went off for Mount a la Bosse[.]

Wednesday 18th[.] La Graine & band tracked & Slept at the fort it being cold Stormy weather[.]

Thursday 19th[.] The Indians went off – leaving with us sixty Buff. Robes & 20 wolves[.] Tabault son in law came for Tobacco & says he will be in tomorrow with 150 Skins in wolves which he kill'd near the Missouri where he has been all winter without seeing a white man[.] Next day he said it would be Six days before he came in to trade[.]

Saturday 21st[.] Tabault sent a messenger to desire us to send to his Lodge for Skins[.] I received letters from Messrs Grant, Thorburn, An: McLeod & Geo. McKay[.] Mr A.N. McLeod came from Fort des prairies i.e. Riviere la Biche to Mr Grants for Goods having spent nearly their all[.] La Brie & the men I Sent to Mr Grants returnd[.]

Sunday 22nd[.] Three young Assinibs came for Tobacco[.] La Binne & to others Started for Tabault's tent for Skins[.]

Monday 23rd[.] Paid Lafontaine's wife for Dressing 33 Buff. Hides for Taureaux & 12 Do for Pack Cords[.] [F]our young men came from the Grand Diables for Tobacco who says he will be in tomorrow[.]

Tuesday 24th[.] Grand Diable arrived & made a present of 6 Buff. Robes & 10 wolves[.] Gave him in return a large keg & a Chiefs Clothing in consideration of his bringing & sendg his band to trade here all winter & in recompense for his giving the Fort a good name & sending every person that would listen to him to trade here[.] Otchightché Tabault's Daughter
