The McGill David Hume Collection

McGill David Hume Collection Research Grant

About the David Hume Collection

The David Hume Collection held in the Rare Books and Special Collections Division of the McGill University Library is the most important collection of Hume materials outside Edinburgh. In addition to fifty manuscript letters by Hume, the collection includes a nearly complete set of the lifetime editions of Hume's works and translations of them. The collection also includes many later eighteenth-century editions of these works, a wide range of the eighteenth-century commentaries on them, and significant holdings of nineteenth- through twenty-first-century editions and commentaries, including many theses devoted to Hume. The McGill Library also supports Hume scholarship through the systematic acquisition of relevant recent publications, particularly those in English, French, German, and Italian, and by subscriptions to Hume Studies and many other journals that regularly publish work on Hume and related authors.

About the Grant

The McGill David Hume Collection Research Grant is open on a competitive basis to established scholars (those whose doctoral studies have been complete for at least six years) who wish to spend a term working in the congenial circumstances of the Rare Books and Special Collections Division of the McGill University Library. The Grant, with a value of up to $5000.00 (Cdn), is intended to enable scholars who are supported by paid research leave or other means to spend a term working full-time on a research project focused on some aspect of the wide-ranging work of David Hume. Those awarded this grant will be provided an office with up-to-date computer equipment and internet access within the Rare Books and Special Collections Division, access to relevant works held in the David Hume Collection and elsewhere in the McGill University Library and Montreal, and ample opportunities to discuss their work with members of the lively academic community encompassing McGill and the three other universities located in Montreal.

The McGill David Hume Collection Research Grant was initiated by a $10,000.00 gift from David and Mary Norton, a gift matched by the McGill University Library. In continuing support of the Grant the Nortons have committed the royalties from their Oxford University Press editions (Oxford Philosophical Texts and the forthcoming Clarendon Edition) of Hume's Treatise of Human Nature and associated pamphlets.
