The McGill David Hume Collection

Contemporary and Historical Comments

EPIGRAM

Written on the fly-leaf in John Hill Burton's "Life
Of David Hume." Ascribed to G.B. Esq.

Tait's pages, clever folk assume,
Are fit for scribes like you to squirt on:
But meddle not with DAVID HUME, -
He's not a theme for you, my BURTON.

Hard was his fate, that ev'ry knave,
When living, should his name throw dirt on;
But harder still, when, in his grave,
Hume found an eulogist in Burton.

Edinburgh, Jan. 31, 1849.
