Description:
This is a typewritten letter from Edward Archibald to Wilder Penfield dated June 8, 1927. On the back of the letter there is a hand-written draft of a telegram response by Dr. Penfield. In the typed letter Dr. Archibald invites Dr. Penfield to consider an appointment in Montreal to be neurosurgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital, a position which would also come with a research and teaching position in McGill University’s Medical Faculty. Dr. Archibald states that there are no other neurosurgical specialists in Montreal, and that Dr. Penfield would have access to all relevant cases at the Royal Victoria Hospital, including those of all of the hospital’s private patients. Admitting that he had previously considered another candidate, Dr. Archibald suggests the he should meet with Dr. Penfield about the position and outlines some particulars of the selection process.
In his hand-written draft response, Dr. Penfield notes that he is interested in the position because of the possibility of combining experimental, pathological and operative work within the same position. Proposing a dinner meeting later in the month, he also inquires about whether it would be feasible to relocate without any capital. There is a crossed out response to the left of the drafted response.
