Advertisements

The examples in the Osler Library collection display a number of techniques and potential audiences. One advertising strategy was to distribute portraits of accomplished German physicians with information about various drugs on the back. Put out by the Homburg pharmaceutical company, these were presumably given to doctors to promote its products to their patients. In contrast, cartoons were used to promote over-the-counter medications directly to the public or advertise pharmacies.
