MFTP #0033 32 The following is the substance of two Beaver Indian Tales, literally translated as far as the Idioms of the language and the capacity of the Translator will permit. Formerly, there was an old man of a Singular character who, together with some others of his tribe in some of their excursions, used to over hear, as if it were the barking of a Dog, but in fact it was found to be a human Creature in the form of a monster, who employed every artifice to entice the curious and unwary stranger to his habitation in hopes of killing him. This detestable practice continued to be carried on for a long time with great success, till at length the old man above mentioned suspected something extraordinary had befallen his relations, purposed to go in quest of them and accordingly went and happening to espy the destroyer of his relations without being observed, he found him to be like another man with this difference; that he had a tail like a Dog hanging from his [32] L E G E N D : |
