A Cold Serene day, the people busy at the Bastions & Squaring timber for a blocks House[.] I mean to leave the Fort in a good State of defence, in case the Fall Indians should visit it[.] The Deceased chef des Canard's Son & Son in law went off to join the war party[.] [T]he Yellow forehead, & Roche de bout with their families came to camp here, they are all in great dread of the Fall Indians[.] La Frenier tells me he & old La Voye have only Killed 25 Beaver since they left here, he is come now for some of the men's horses for the Summer; in fact his conduct during the winter & Spring convinces me he is a trifler. Thursday 7th[.] Not so cold as usual[.] I Sent Demarrais to the Elbow for some empty Kegs, & Iron hoops, with other old Iron works that Mr Sutherland agreed to leave there for me, he came back in the evening; he says Mr Sutherland only left there early this morning[.] I got 32 Bags of Pimican made today, which compleats the number 125 made here & ten I bought, or rather bartered with Mr Sutherland[.] Some more old women came to the Fort today[.] I prevailed on Jacco, Cut Finger, Roche de Boute, Jour d'Enfant, & Yellow Forehead, to sett off to look for Beaver, they are to go off tomorrow; If a fine day[.] Friday 8th[.] A Raw morning began to rain & blow about ten oClock which continued all day[.] Forsier, Dauphiné, & Jacques, whom I Sent down with the Batteau & Skin Canoes came back[.] [T]hey came up with the River à la Cocquill men, the night of the 6th Inst. half way between River Qui Appelle & Shell river they having left the later place the same day[.] [O]ne of the red river Boats took Dauphine's & Forsier's Canoe load, which ennabled them to return, & the rest proceeded on yesterday, as they did on their return[.] The Indians did not go off, owing to the bad weather[.] I gave the Chef de Canard's widow to the Amt 28 Plus, & took the Slave Woman, whom next Fall I Shall Sell for a good price to one of the men, She was wife to the Deceased old man. Saturday 9th[.] Raining, & Sleet all day, & blowing very hard[,] all the Houses in the Fort leaked considerably[.] The Indians could not go off, five of the Hudson's bay people's dogs came here this evening[.] The men preparing to be off Monday for S. River[.] Sunday 10th[.] Still raining, & Cold[,] the water is remarkably high, & all the low ground hereabout is entirely deludged. Monday 11th[.] Still very bad weather, the water rising very fast, Snowed today[.] I weighed the Grease that remains, vizt 2900lb or 37 Kegs[.] [T]he people could not go off today owing to the badness of the day.
