MFTP #0028 35 Friday 1st May 1801[.] A very fine day[.] Mr Sutherland sent up my horse by one of his men, & 4 empty kegs with Iron hoops[.] La Comble & Bte Roy came back with the pounded meat[.] I Sent off Frisé, La France, Bellile, Le Fevre, & 4 of my horses loaded with the 6 Packs, a keg Marrow fat & a bag of Salted & dryed tongues, & Robes[.] I wrote Mr Harmon to Send up Fras Roy & an other man with the horses that remained below[.] The Indians are eating our provisions very fast[.] [T]wo old women with a number of children came here from the Frain's camp, & the Cut finger and the Petit Crapaud came from an other large Camp two days march off[,] the Cut finger had been alone on a visit there[.] [T]hose that are arrived report that the vestiges of numerous bands of Fall Indians have been seen in different places, who are in search of the Crees & Stone Indians, in hopes of meeting with detached parties of them to cut them off[.] I Sent some men to Keep the Horses on the Side of the River as the Grass is all ate up on this Side[.] Mr Sutherland's man returned home again. Saturday 2d[.] A Rainy boisterous day, it rained incessantly all night[.] [O]ne of the HB. Co's Men came here all the way from Shell river in order to get bled, as he is plagued with pains in his arms &c. which he insists is owing to a Superabundance of blood[.] I had a few lines from Mr Sutherland by, him; he tells me he met my people one Wednessday half way between the Old Fort at the Elbow, & River Tremblante Fort, they had then passed the worst part of the road[.] [L]ate in the evening Jacco the Cree Bastard, came here with his wives, children, & baggage[,] he Says he himself has seen the vestiges of Some Fall Indians not two days journey from here which, partly is the reason of his comming to the Fort so soon; he intends, he Says to pass the Summer here about[.] This night the House was filled with women & children who were afraid to Sleep in their lodges, on account of the rumours abroad about the Fall Indians. Sunday 3d[.] Snowing, & blowing, all the forenoon cleared up & fine weather in the afternoon[.] I bled the HBay man today & gave him some camphorated Spirits of wine to rub his arms with, I lent him a horse to carry him home as he is very unwell. The women came in to the Fort again to night[.] Monday 4th[.] I went down to the Elbow to Settle finally about the Wolves I sold Sutherland[.] [T]his is a fine day, I Slept at the Elbow[.] I exchanged a fine Gun of the Co's for a H.B. Gun with a Bayonette[.] Teusday 5th[.] Came home in the afternoon, found Plante very ill in bed[.] [T]he Yellow Forehead (a cree) came here, he Says his family are near here, he means to pass the Summer about the Fort[.] Snow & Sleet by turns all day[.] La Frenier came here late at night (The free man)[.] [34] L E G E N D : |
