Saturday 21^st March 1801[.] A very fine day[.] Collin, and the other men came back from the Elbow[.] M^r Sutherland wrote me he should pay me the thirty Skin's value on his hunter's account[.]

Sunday 22^d[.] Raining all day[.] [T]he Old La Cern fine came here early in the morning, he brought a few pounds of dryed meat which he traded for Rum, but as he has been all winter at Riviere à la Cocquill I presume he Still owes M^r Malhiot[.] I therefore gave him nothing to encourage him to return here[,] he is with the Barbue & Six more tents two days march off[,] they have nothing at all according to his account[.] The rain has sunk the Snow very much, the Hills and eminences are quite bare now. The Cern fine tells me the Buffaloe (Cows) are within two hours walk of the Fort.

Monday 23^d[.] I Sent off Cadotte, & Forsier, along with La Frenier, and old La Voye, for La Frenier's few Skins that he killed last fall[.] The men at the Fort are busy Sawing & preparing wood for the Boat[.] Demarrais is Sick[.] M^r Sutherland Sent up two of his men who arrived here before ten oClock A.M.[,] he Sent me up a Mare & a very fine Colt as the payment of the thirty Skins he became responsible to pay for the Hunter, his men returned home directly[.] I Sent him 40 wolves[,] 20 Badgers, 2 Callico Shirts & a white Shirt with a Pack of Cards all which I barter with him for Cloth, Blankets, & Guns[.] [T]he wolves are none of the best, but the Badgers are Still worse, yet he takes the 20 for ten Skins, whereas I should not be at the trouble of picking of the dung hill[.] [I]t rained incessantly from morn till Sun Sett.

Teusday 24^th[.] The Cern fine went off, I did not even give him a bit of Tob^co or a Shott of Amunition[.] The people are some at work at the Batteau wood, others at the Ice house, & Demarrais still sick[.] [T]he Snow thawed greatly this forenoon, but in the afternoon there fell Six Inches at least in the Short Space of four hours.

Wednessday 25^th[.] A very charming day, a great part of what Snow fell yesterday melted[.] The People are busy at the Ice House[.] A young Cree came here in the evening (Falcon's brother in law) for medecines for his father he having been bit (in the leg) by a Dog, they are two days March off[.] The time approaches now that we must watch our horses as otherwise the Stone Indians will Steal them in consequence of which I keep mine in the Fort day & night[.] Demarrais is very unwell, as is my Servant (Plante).
