MFTP #0028 3 Saturday 15th November 1800[.] A Cloudy, but mild day[.] Sent La Rose with Roy's step-son to the Thunder's tent, to try to prevail with his wife, (the Grey mare being the better horse) to send her fe[w] furs here, I sent 3 feet of Tobacco, for an encouragement to them so to do[.] Sunday 16th[.] Still Cloudy, – rather colder than usual[.] Collin came back, he brought, home 24 Catts, & 37 Beavers, he tells me the Vent du Nord, Bear, & Mauvais Mâl, are in the nut hill working the Beaver, but unfortuneately he adds they intend soon leaving that, & steering to the plains to look for their Beloved Buffaloes[.] Frisé came from our hunters with ¾ of an Elk, the only meat we had from them for these twelve days past, & they are not at all ashamed to send me word if I do not send them Rum they'll not hunt for the Fort, & such is my present situation that I will be necessitated to comply with their very unreasonable, tho' common request[.] Monday 17th[.] Cloudy, but very cold, in fact it's the only cold day we have as yet had this Fall[.] La Rose came from the Tonnerres, but brought no skins, they it seems told him, they would soon come to the Fort & wished to be the bearers of them, themselves they are starving, – having nothing to subsist on but Rabbits, of which Indeed there are vast numbers this year, about here[.] Ettiene Ducharm is unwell I gave him an emetic this afternoon. Roy is very unwell to day with a Swell'd face & head[.] Teusday 18th[.] Cold, Clear, & Calm[.] I sent, Dauphiné & L'Heureux with Two Horses for some articles I stand in need of from Swan River[.] I Sent Mr Perigné 2 Looking glasses, & 30lb of grease, Cadian returned to him with my men[.] I Sent Frisé to guide La Bonne (Maron) or Jacques (for I dont' know which of these is his real name) to the Hunters as he is sent to remain his turn with them[.] I gave a Doze of Physic to E. Ducharm, this morning[.] La Comble, & Cadottes horses, which, when I was at Fort Dauphin, (five weeks ago) were supposed to have been stolen by, the Stone Indians, came off themselves to the Fort, in very good case[.] The Frêne, Tabo, Bertrand, & 4 others (young men) arrived here very late in the evening, the first paid his Debt, the next, gave 40 Kitts en present, & told me he expected at least a large Keg, & a little [stro]nger than I generally made it[.] The Frênes wife (being Drunk) fell on a Knife she had in a smoaking bag at her girdle, & by which she was Stabed an inch and a half Deep close under the Ribs, – she remained senceless for a long time[.] Roy had his face & head amazeingly swelled, & has a pretty strong fever, I gave him a little flour to make a Little soup with, as he cannot open his mouth to eat any meat[.] [3] L E G E N D : |
