MFTP #0016 Monday 13th April 1800[.] Marteau and four more O Chepeweans arrived – they paid 207 Skins Credits in peltries[.] Several frenchmen arrived from their different fisheries[.] Tuesday 14th[.] Forgot to mention yesterday that Cadien Blanc, Gallarneau Marciel and Joseph Boucher put a Canoe on the Stocks and had 60lb fresh Meat each for 11 days[.] This day a Canoe was sew'd and another put on the Bew[.] Weighed 65 Packs[.] Gave the prey to four Men who helped me[.] Two young Men arrived from the Grand donquin's Byr – they traded 2 Skins Br and went off[.] An affair happened here this day which as it will be a Check upon french boasters deserves a place in the Journal[.] Papin among the frenchmen has a great renomie for his Superiour Strength he bragged this afternoon that he Could lay the strongest of the Montagners flat on the Ground either in the Montagner or french fashion of wrestling – accordingly Dubois Comrade undertook to wrestle with him in the french fashion – but instead of Papin's throwing the Montagner – the Montagner soon twisted Papin to the Ground[.] After Papin Came Beauchemin another french Bully but he weighed less in the Montagner's hands than the former[.] [N]ext Little Lebeau fancied he was Strong and tried his Success but Dubois Comrade made him Kiss the Ground twice[.] After Lebeau Felix Labri a boaster and a wrestler, thought to shew his Skill & Strength – however he found himself mistaken for he in a Short time experienced the fate of the other frenchmen[.] In a word the Montagner is very strong but no boaster – the frenchmen are great boasters but can not prove it for they are not strong[.] Wednesday 15th[.] Finished weighing the Grand River Packs[.] Out of 78 there are 90 – for my part I don't Know what they weighed before but am Certain that they weigh now 88 or 89lb which I have proved several ways[.] A Canoe was taken of the Stocks and another put on[.] 16th[.] Thursday. Trois Pouces sent for Tobacco[.] Sent him 1 foot Tobacco and a little shot. Another Canoe was finished. Blowing very hard all day[.] Two Cords of dry wood which Cadien le Blanc piled up behind Cadien Grosnez's House exactly at the Corner of the Hangard which Contains the Ammunition, High wines &c. On this Pile of wood Picote's wife had spread some Moose which from Sparks that flew from Cadien Gros nez's Chimney took fire and Served as Spunk to the wood. Had not Quebec Daughter advertised us the Hangard would in a short time have blown up – & of Course we would under gone the same Fate[.] It is to be lamented, by every body who [37] L E G E N D : |
