McKenzie, Charles. Journal of the Second, Third and Fourth Expeditions to the Missouri, 1805, 1806 with the Supplement to the Second Expedition. An electronic transcription. MFTP #0010 bore a hole at each shoulder blade through which he passed a pin of hard wood about four Inches long by half an Inch in thickness. To this pin he fastened a cord of eight in length. t the end of this cord were ted seven Bulls heads or more according to the quality of the warrior. Such as had Killed of the enemy and had taken scalps had a mans scull tied on each side of his breast and a scalp fastened a little below the eyes;– a Cane in the right hand to which also was fastened a scalp. But such as less succesful in war were not distinguished with so many ornaments. They had not the honour of training so many Bulls heads and their Canes in lieu of Scalps only eagle tails fixed upon them. These young warriors were entirely naked;– abating a Coat of white paint which they had given their bodies. the old man ha finished first part the young warriors started up and moved forward – but the heads which trained behind them, became often entangled and made their progress slow and painful[.] One man however who was more loaded than any of the others rushed through the Crowd every thing that happened to be in his way soon gained his destination – the great lodge was received by a multitude of Spectators with Shouts of applause[.] The others would fain have followed the example – but their hearts failed them and they leaned often upon their Canes[.] as the warriors arrived at the Lodge all the heads were thrown over a high beam raised the from the ground; they remained suspended by the pins through the shoulders.
