Mississourie Continued or rather Supplement to his

third Journey 2nd Journey

July 10th

To celebrate a great festival all the old men of the Enasas village assembled at the lodge of the first chief – in order to appoint proper officers to Keep the peace during its duration[.]

11th

This morning at the break of day an old man harangued through the village. Soon after appeared twelve robust Young men with their heads enclossed in bladders and their bodies bare bare appeared[.] The half of their bodies downwards to the heels were painted half in vermillion – The other half were painted with & half with white earth – denoting as the as emblems of punishment and pardon united in the same persons[.] appeared

These guardians entered of this Noble Order entered every lodge and directed the women to attend their duty as go into the woods for branches to cover the Medicine Lodge giving directions. When this Lodge whose sp[…] frame is always standing in the field at some distance from the village – and supported upon a pillar, which rises in the center, of twenty five feet high. When this Lodge was ready A lodge the Medicine Lodge was prepared[.] The Men with their pipes and Drums walked into it at first entered – the women followed them with an assortment of the best of eatables things that could be found for the feast[.] Every The Dishes were aired over a fire at the Door of the lodge made for the purpose and out of which […] an offering out of each was made to the Sun which […] were left for the Dogs to eat When the eating business […] When dinner was over – all hands Smoaked and danced for the rest of the day Evening[.]

This afternoon several Young men placed themselves extended upon their bellies. Then an old man with the beard barb of an arrow
