The same question was put to each of the others who were fifteen in number[.] But the others were more moderate in their contented by giving a finger or a Slice of flesh from arms &c[.] The old man who had the execution of this affair in charge was provided with a Knife an awl and the bitt of a spanish bridle. He began to exercise his hand upon the Heroes – by cutting in shoulders two circles from which he raised two stripes in parallel lines down to the [.] [D]uring this operation which was performed upon both arms the spectators renewed their noise so that the groans of the suffer if he uttered any could not be heard[.] Then the little finger of the right was cut off at the second joint – that of his left hand seemed to have experienced the same ceremony in a former occasion[.] Now the Bridle Bitt was introduced red hot and applied to the Breast until the flesh in a large circle rose into a hard crust[.] All this time this sufferer as well as his companions were hanging suspended from the beam of the Lodge [17] L E G E N D : |
