the mean time all the spectators men women and children of all sexes and sizes with drums beating, with singing, and dancing and with every thing that had could sound made a dreadful noise. Then the old man approached the first heros and asked him what he was disposed to give unto unto the Sun that the Sun might continue to show his shine upon high with kindness[.] I shall give unto unto the Sun that he may shew me the Continuance of his continue to shine upon me with Kindness Two stripes of flesh from each of my arms beginning at my shoulder blade and finishing at my fingers wrists[.] Also I shall also give unto the Sun one of my fingers and you will allow you moreover to make imprint with a red hot iron burn with an emblem of the Sun upon my breast. The same question was put to each of the others and who were fifteen in number[.] But the others were more moderate in their devotions – they devotional sacrifices […] contented themselves themselves himself by giving either a finger or a Slice of flesh from part of him their both the arms &c[.]

The old man who had the execution of this affair in charge was provided with a Knife an awl and the bitt of a spanish bridle. He began to exercise his hand upon the boldest of the Heroes – by cutting in the each shoulders two circles from which he raised two stripes in parrallel lines down to the fingers wrists[.] [D]uring this operation which was performed upon both arms the spectators renewed their noise so that the groans of the sufferer if he uttered any could not be heard[.] Then the little finger of the right arm hand was cut off at the second joint – that of his left hand seemed to have already experienced the same ceremony in a former occasion[.] Now the Bridle Bitt was introduced red hot and applied to the Breast until the flesh in a large circle rose into a hard crust[.] All this time this sufferer as well as his companions were hanging suspended from the beam of the
