I would not take any from them[.] Then the Great chief asked me what what was the Use of Beaver? "You have every thing that is good in your country" he said[.] We have I replied, but we have no beaver, and the Chief of the white people will be displeased with me unless I go to the Shyann Country – he knows every thing, and he will be angry with You my father for detaining me from this journey[.] "If that is the truth, my Son – said the Borgne You may go Tomorrow Morning but should You be killed as I fear you will – Say to You Chief before you go – not to blame us[.]" He then introduced the pipe of Race which he lighted – pointed to the elements as usual – then pointing towards our Fort – he harangued the Chief of the white people as follows[:] "My Equal – he said, do not be offended – for saying to my Son, be wise and avoid bad men – I am the friend of white men – and I have been of service to them[.] This thou knowest – and thou knowest the goodness of my heart – for my son says that thou knowest all things[.]" Then turning round to me "Thou sayest my son – that the Chief of the White people knows every thing – but
