MFTP #0009 his departure[.] Many councils were held on the occasion – but all were of no avail[.] The Young Warrior fearing his renown should be injured by a refusal was determined and prepared for his departure[.] This gave a fresh proof of his courage[.] I resided in the Borgn Tent[.] It was there all the Strangers paid the first visit – and all the wise men of the Tribe assembled on great occasions[.] My Situation therefore afforded to me a good oppertunity for learning whatever was going on[.] Stangers who were not in the habit of meeting White people gazed at me with an air of curiosity[.] [S]ome were affraid to approach me – others were troublesome & wished to know if I was in every respect the same as Indians[.] [A]t length all became familiar, and were friendly inclined[.] [T]his conduct encouraged me to be inqusitive regarding their Country; they willingly answered all my questions and invited me to visit their friends[.] I felt happy at this invitation and promised to accept of it – but the Indians of the Village opposed my views and offered me presents – I [92] L E G E N D : |
