Cochran, Andrew William. Eight letters to Roderick Mackenzie, 1823-1837. An electronic transcription. MFTP #0004 no[t] be given to the world in a permanent & well digested form; but the arrangement of them, no doubt would be troublesome and laborious. I wish you would consider and let me know how far you would be disposed to let the Society co-operate with you in this matter. We are now publishing a very carious and interesting Historical Manuscript relating to the affairs of this country & of Acadia between 1748 & 1760, — which Mr Plenderleath Christie of Montreal has allowed us to copy and publish[.] Mr Smith had access to a Manuscript, substantially the same, in compiling his history; but he has made only a limited use of it; and has left out, (perhaps of necessity) a number of curious details which the French are so fond of throwing into their Memoires pour servir à l’histoire[.] It will make a vol. of about 200 pages; and I am now daily occupied in superintending the publication of it. The Priests will not like it, for although written by a French officer, & a Catholic, it is very hard upon the Jesuits & others of the Soutanes[.] You mention in your letter of the 14h Octr that your brother Mr H.M.'s application for lands was rejected some years ago[.] I am not aware of the causes of this, when others with no better (or worse) claims got their lands; but I would suggest to you to renew the application (if it was made originally before 1830) as you will have seen by the Governor’s message to the Assy in the last Session (so called) that all Militia claims lodged before that period will now be considered[.] A Board is constituted for the purpose of examining them, consisting of the Commr of Crown lands, the DyAdjt Genl of Militia and the Surveyor General[.] The notification of their first proceeding to business will probably appear tomorrow. Rt Felton’s public career is at an end, — his removal from office being confirmed from home[.] Believing the Sentence to be just and proper, I still feel for the man who ends so discreditably a course of 10 years [3] L E G E N D : |
