Cochran, Andrew William. Eight letters to Roderick Mackenzie, 1823-1837. An electronic transcription. MFTP #0004

spirits; I dined in company with him on Saturday; and never saw him more cheerful[.] He leaves Quebec in a day or two to visit the Land Company's tract about the Sources of the St Francis. He goes up by Craig's Road & will return down the St Francis[.] I doubt whether he has received any instructions as yet from the new Colonial Secretary; Captn Mackinnen is expected in a short time[.] The ill-used ex-Atty General Stuart, is also daily looked for.

I hope that the Cholera has spared all your friends on this visitation[.] We are not quite free from it here, but the deaths do not exceed two or three a day, from that disease. I am thankful to say that by God's blessing & protection all my little family & friends have escaped[.] I have lived the whole of this summer in the country, as indeed I have done for may years past, for my own health & that of my family[.] In 1832 I purchased a hous Canadian house and Garden, about four miles from town on the road to Cap Rouge overlooking the River; and here I have amused myself with improving the house & planting & gardening, & occupying myself with business, & reading & writing, & teaching my boy and farming, & a little idling, for the last two summers[.] During the prevalence of the disease, I have kept away from town except when business or public duty called me there[.] Since I saw you, I have had a severe affliction in the loss of my eldest daughter in May 1833, but my number has again been made up to five, by the birth of a boy who is to bear the name of George Ramsay, –I need not say from whom. I dare say you will be pleased to hear that at last measures are taking to complete Wolfes monument by putting up the marble slabs, with the inscriptions, & the names of Wolfe & Montclam in bronzed letters. I am getting this done (jointly with Major Young of the 79h, the officer who planned the obelisk, & who was once Lord D.'s extra Aide de Camp) and it is done at the earnest desire & at the expence of Lord D.
