Dr. James Beattie (1735-1803) was a Scottish scholar and writer, who was a professor of moral philosophy at Marischal College, Aberdeen. He is known particularly for his two works, "Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth" (1770), a response to the philosophy of David Hume, and "The Minstrel" (1771-74), an autobiographical poem.
