Animals are a popular subject of children's book. The Soviet Union was no exception. While political content was rarely present, a distinguishing feature was the large percentage of animal books with a clearly didactic theme - illustrated here for instance by the series Kto shto jest (Who eats what), Vitalii Bianki's Gde raki zimuiut (Where lobsters spend winter, 1935), Evgenii Rachev's Zviri pivnichnykh moriv (Animals of northern seas, 1933) and other titles.
