Letter from Wilder Penfield to H. Rowan Gaither Jr., August 6, 1955.
Typewritten letter from Wilder Penfield and Theodore Rasmussen of the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) to H. Rowan Gaither, President of the Ford Foundation. Penfield and Rasmusen write regarding a proposal they submitted to the Ford Foundation that was initially turned down. In light of the recent public announcement of money being put toward mental illness research by the Ford Foundation, Penfield and Rasmussen write of their intent to re-submit their proposal and be considered for funding. Penfield and Rasmussen describe the research they have performed in the past, how it has contributed to the advancement of the field, and future studies they intend to carry out. They describe the history and support the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) has received thus far, and give an account of the quality of facilities and equipment with which this research will be carried out. Penfield and Rasmussen request a $500,000.00 endowment, asserting the necessity of a permanent, stable endowment in the maintenance of a highly skilled staff and efficient operation of laboratories. The requested endowment would go towards establishing research fellowships at the MNI.
