Draft of the crest of the Montreal Neurological Institute, drawing.
Description:
This is a hand-drawn draft of the Montreal Neurological Institute's coat of arms. Above the shield in the middle of the coat of arms are a sun and a hill, crowned by the word “Montreal.” There is a brain on either side of the top of the shield. Each brain’s spinal cord borders its respective side of the shield. The bottom half of the shield is bordered by the words “NEUROLOGICAL INSTITUTE”. The shield is a variation of the shield of McGill University. Its background is divided into a bottom section with three triangular-shaped teeth or peeks along its top side, representing the three peeks of Mount Royal. On either side of the top section is a crown, and in the middle is an open book. The bottom section of the shield is filled with McGill University’s Latin motto "GRANDESCUNT AUCTA LABORE" (By hard work, all things increase), as well as McGill University’s three heraldic martlets, which were originally part of the family coat of arms of James McGill, the founder of the university.

Notes:
The handwritten note, transcribed reads: "This is a suggested combination. It is too crowded of course. The words Montreal Neuro-logical Institute must be large enough to be legible. I suppose the crown should not be below anything."

This draft was drawn on McGill University Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery stationary.
