This is a hand drawn draft of the Montreal Neurological Institute's coat of arms. Above the shield in the middle of the coat of arms are forest and sunset, crowned by the words "Ex Libris" (Out of the books). There is a brain on either side of the top of the shield. Each brain’s spinal cord borders the side of the shield, eventually fading away or ending half way down the shield. The top of the shield is bordered by the word “MONTREAL” and the bottom half of the shield is bordered by the words “NEUROLOGICAL INSTITUTE”. The shield is a variation of the shield of McGill University. Its background is divided into a white bottom section with three triangular-shaped teeth or peeks along its top side, representing the three peeks of Mount Royal. The top section is darker in colour. On either side of this top section is a crown, and in the middle is the Rod of Asclepius within a book. The bottom section of the shield is filled with McGill University’s Latin motto "GRANDESCUNT AUCTA LABORE" (By hard work, all things increase), as well as McGill University’s three heraldic martlets, which were originally part of the family coat of arms of James McGill, the founder of the university.
