Letter from Wilder Penfield to J.C. Mackenzie, September 28, 1944.
This is a typewritten letter from Dr. Wilder Penfield to Colonel J.C. Mackenzie of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. In the letter Penfield discusses the need to start construction of a Military Annex adjacent to the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI). Previously agreed upon by the MNI and the military, the construction of the Military Annex was to allow the MNI to house and care for a projected increase in the number of military casualties being sent to the MNI for neurological treatment. Believing that a significant influx of military neurological patients is imminent, Dr. Penfield uses the letter to stress to Colonel Mackenzie that construction on the Military Annex needs to begin as soon as possible. Dr. Penfield also discusses how the care provided for the larger number of service personnel was to be paid for. He suggests maintaining the existing rate for military patients, which up until that point was paid by the Department of Pensions and National Health. However, he also mentions several possible alternate arrangements, as well as alternative means by which the military could pay for the professional services carried out by MNI staff. The letter is dated September 28, 1944.
