In general they are pretty industrious and good economists in many respects. Their principal amusement is dancing, being generally averse to gaming, unless when rich in ammunition, when they will venture to stake a Ball or so against its value. They are ignorant without being superstitious, ungovernable in some respects by their Chiefs, whom they obey in hopes of being recompensed – they are of the middle stature and of an inoffensive disposition: they appear to have no idea of a Supernatural Being – however, they seem to entertain some conceptions of a future state; alleging that the dead must penetrate through the earth, after which they find a large lake, which being crossed, they find a new world, in which they hope to find their Ancestors, with whom they begin [9] L E G E N D : |
