MFTP #0028 33 Saturday 18th April 1801[.] Still raining or rather drizling all day[.] All the Indians went off, I gave a few Cns to some of those I know best[.] I lent a Gun to the Petite Roche, as he tells me he does not go to war, I purchased 4 Lodges from this last band; I put up about a bale of Stds. & blkts. for Fort Dauphin with 30lb Shott & wrote Ferguson & Mitchel. Sunday 19th[.] A fine day[.] Payet, & La Plante Sett off as did La Couture by whom I wrote Mr McDonell & Sent him 60lb Tobacco[.] I Sent Demarrais to the Montaigne des Oiseaux for La France & Cadien as they have horses to help to bring down some of the effects at this place to the Elbow[.] Fallardau, went off with his Small Skin Canoe[.] Cut finger came here from the Elbow, he has nothing whatever to trade, he says he means to return to Swan River[.] We made 30 bags Pimican[.] Monday 20th[.] A fine day, the people busy getting the Skin Canoes & Batteau ready[.] [A] Small band of Crees & Stone Indians came here[.] Cut finger went off to the Elbow for his Lodge & family[.] Tuesday 21st[.] The Little band of Indians traded what Robes, wolves & provisions they brought[.] We made what few Packs we have here, up today vizt 30[.] [I]n the evening 2 Stone Indians & a Cree came here for Tobacco, as a very large band of both Crees & Stone Indians are to be here tomorrow, they slept here[.] The Poor old Indian (Chef des Canards) is exceedingly ill today[.] Wednesday 22d[.] The band of Indians arrived, I gave them all half a pint each to drink on arrival, vizt 39 men, they afterwards traded some, the dancd & Sung a considerable time[.] [T]he Old Bras Court & family came here likewise, but I did not suffer them to drink with the others[.] I was forced to buy a horse from one of the Crees for 16 half pints of liquor mixed at 4qts. to the large[.] Demarrais, La France & Candien came from the Montaigne des Oiseau, they tell me that Bellile is gone with my letter to Mr Harmon to the Lower Fort[.] [T]his is a very warm day[,] the men finished gumming the boat and Canoes, & are ready to be off tomorrow[.] Thursday 23d[.] A very fine day[.] I Sent off, the boat & the two Skin Canoes, the former loaded with 36 Pieces & the 2 later 12 Pcs each, 4 men in the boat & 2 in each of the Canoes[.] All the Indians danced & Traded today & the greater part of them went off[.] Cut finger came from the Elbow with his lodge &c. The Jour d'Enfant & his Lodge arrived here, in the evening. Friday 24th[.] A Cold Boisterous day[.] [A]ll the Crees & Stone Indians went off, & I gave the Jeune Premier & Bras Court what little rum I kept for them[,] the former I Clothed altho' he only made a present of ten Skins as Mr McGillis promised it to him last fall, we got about 50 Robes this trip & 300 bladders of Grease[.] [T]he Old Chef de Canard's son remained with his father.
