McLeod, Norman. Journal, Alexandria, 1800-1801. An electronic transcription. MFTP #0028 21 Saturday 7th February 1801[.] Cold day[,] Snowed a little in the morning[.] I Sent Dannis, Girardin, & Jack for meat to the Indian Hunters, Roy is getting wood for Snow Shoe frames[.] Le Fevre & Petite Jean came here from Perignes[,] they brought me a keg of Salt, & a Bag of Balls, on Sledges drawn by Horses[,] they are sent by Mr Perigné for some Buffaloe Meat. About twelve oClock at night Cadote & Vallé arrived, & with them Mr Montour, the brought the Genl Express, along with them, for which Cadotte & Vallé remained 15 days, it not being arrived[.] Sunday 8th[.] A Cold, & Cloudy day[.] Girardin & Dannis with Jack came back with the meat. [R]eading letters all day[.] Monday 9th[.] Still Cold & Snowing a little[.] [B]egan to write my dispatches Pr the Express[.] from Swan river with 2 Pieces[.] Teusday 10th[.] Cold & Clear[.] Jollifour, La Pointe & La Plante arrived from Fort Dauphin[,] they brought me a letter from Mr Ferguson wherein he tells me that Cardin has built a Fort at Turtle River, but is doing very little either there or at Fort Dauphin, he writes me likewise that Mitchel has with drawn Chenettes fort as the few Indians that were there are doing nothing[.] La Comble is amazingly sick he neither eats or Sleeps[.] Pierre's band of Iroq[uo]is left this today for the River Qui Appelle where they are gone for their effects as they mean to go by land to Lower Fort des Prairies[.] Gervais came here & brought me a letter from Mr McDonell wherein he tells me, he is out of H.Wines[.] The XY Iroquois arrived from River Qui Appelle, & one of the X.Y. Men along with them, they mean to Sett off for Fort des Prairies imideately[.] Wednessday 11th[.] Cold, & Cloudy[.] Mr Harmon & Collin arrived with 8 good Sledges load of Pounded Meat and Grease. The XY. Iroquois Sett off[.] I hired Jollifour to day for 2 Years. Thursday 12th[.] I Sent off Cadotte, & Frise for River la Cocquille with the Express[.] I wrote the following gentlem[en] Agents NW. Co. Messrs McGillivary, Shaw, McLeod, Welles[,] H. McKenzie, Keneth McKenzie, Peter Grant, W. McKay[,] C. Chaboillez, John McDonell, & Mr Malhiot. This is a fine Mild day. Sent all the men for Meat. Friday 13th[.] Jollifour & the 2 other went off[.] I Sent about a bale of goods to Fort Dauphin, & wrote Mr Ferguson a long letter & told him that people ought absolutely to be Sent to oppose Cardin at Turtle River[.] I Sent Gervais, off express with a letter for Mr McDonell, in hopes of overtaking the Genl Express[.] [20] L E G E N D : |
