"violation of the Prince Regent's Proclamation … men we understand July 11th.July 1 men we understand …"

On the 12th of July Messieurs Shaw and Mactavish arrived at York Factory. After the escape of Mr Machintosh they were conveyed to Norway House, an establishment of the Hudson's Bay Company situated at the north end of Lake Winipie, where all the prisoners were confined on a small rocky island in the lake, about a mile from the fort. Here Mr MacTavish, having been told that it was intended to send him to the Rock on the way to York Factory, wrote a letter to Williams reminding him of a his promise he had made to send them to Canada. On The next morning, the 3d of July, Williams came over to the island, and said deponent told Mr. MacTavish that he intended to send him to England, and upon being reproached with the breach of his promise to send them all to Canada, he carelessly replied, "It may be so, but I have changed my mind." To Mr Shaw's requisition to be sent to Canada, he answered that he had neither canoes nor men to spare for his conveyance, that therefore he must proceed to the Rock, where he pledged his word (risum teneatis) to provide the means of conveying him to Canada
