This is the best of the Kings Posts for furs. A Canadian of the name of Vallé with his family stays here he keeps the place in high order and is a very civil body. His wife appeared to have nothing prepossessing in her person & manners but she makes up for any deficiency in these respects by keeping her Husbands accompts. The 23rd early in the morning we left Monsieur and Madam Vallé to squint at each other and on the 24th we got to the River Godbout, the distance twenty two Leagues. The Banks of Maniquagan, which we passed on the way and which are the terror of mariners, extend three leagues into the River St Lawrence and are ten leagues long[.] Three considerable Rivers, the Betsamis Bustard & Maniquagan discharge themselves on those Banks. Their gaping mouths at first sight make a grand show but they are choked at the entrance with sand and they soon become rapid and dwindle away to the common size.
