Chicoutimy till we pass Lake St John the distance of ten leagues is fit for cultivation the soil being good the face of the Country pretty level and the Climate the same as at Quebec from which across the Country it is distant three days Journey either in a small Canoe or on snow shoes. The sorts of wood that grow on this fertile Tract of Land is are Maple, red & white pine, white and black birch, Ash, Cedar and Elm.

The Post of Lake St John is built on the south of the Lake four leagues from its entrance at the mouth of a beautiful River where the Jesuits under the French Government had a settlement for the purpose of instructing the Indians until expelled for receiving too many costly presents of furs for their spiritual services[.] Some marks of their Industry and improvements are still to be seen at this place. The Plum & apple trees of their Garden grown wild through want of care yet bear fruit in abundance. The foundation of their Church and other Buildings as well as the Church yard are still visible. The Bell of their Church two iron spades a horse shoe a scythe and a bar of Iron two feet in length have lately been dug out of the ruins of this apparently
