McKenzie, James. Some Account of the King's Posts, the Labrador Coast, and the Island of Anticosti by an Indian Trader Residing there Several Years with a Description of the Natives and the Journal of a trip through those Countries in 1808 by the Same Person. An electronic transcription. MFTP #0017 of a dwelling House, outhouses and a chapel, which has stood one hundred & ten years, stand upon the angle formed by the junction of the Sagunay and the St Lawrence. The Sagunay flowing on the west between two immense Ramparts of Rocks – a chain of high mountains in the shape of a semicircle on the N & E. and the St Lawrence in front give this place rather a Romantic appearance. The Harbour before the House is a beautiful sandy Bay in the shape of a horse shoe and a mile in circumference. The Bank on which the houses are built rises about twenty five feet above the level of the water – it is divided in two equal parts by a brook of clear water and though composed of sand it is covered with green turf. The people fishing and the whales playing in the Bason before the House, the Cattle grazing round the Gardens and the birds flying about with the universal verdure which prevails in the Summer season gives the place a lively enough appearance – but how sadly the scene is reversed in the winter when not only the animated part of the creation retires from the horrid prospect but the very rocks and Trees seem to shrink and [61] L E G E N D : |
