I am now come to that part of my narrative in which as a Traveller I conceive it my duty to give you some account of the natives of the Country I have been describing and to introduce you with all due respect and decorum to our princes and princesses of ragged fame[.] In the Course of my peregrination the natives of the Kings Posts are the only Tribe of Savages I have seen who live in such perfect ignorance and indifference about their origin as to have no traditional account whatever handed down among to assist in clearing away the rubbish from this obscure point. I have questioned many of the most knowing among them upon this important subject but a vacant stare conveyed all the answer I could obtain to my enquiry save from one old Man at Mingan who said that all he knew or cared to know concerning his forefathers [13] L E G E N D : |
