A Hudson Bay man who happened to be present as a spectator a fine Horse and two elegantly painted robes which he carried with the approbation of his Master I could not this conduct[.] As the White people were not of the party and had not furnished any thing the dance they certainly had no kind of claim upon the property which it produced – and which I conceived was abandoned by the natives a Sacrifice[.] The night before I did not sleep a wink the noise was so great – [.] The women having had their turn I thought the affair finished but I was mistaken they continued their triumphant merriment for a whole fortnight when it was by another of a more nature[.] A Young man brother to the great chief sent for me one forenoon – to his lodge – I went. after paying me the usual civilities . He observed that he had been at war in the course of my absence – I killed, said he, a Serpent chief – two of his Young men with women and Children. I a Young slave I brought her she was well – I intended her for you[.] But at the end of three she went in the night & a fine horse this lodge[.]" "Where did she go', said I,' – she went to her relations where she is by this time , This was the third time she was taken prisoner this is the third time she has escaped but the two past times she carried nothing but her own robe away – but now she well dressed and has two knives.
