they make use of porcupine tails[.] The women are careless about their hair, which scarcely reaches the shoulders. To make it look fine they sometimes throw a little water over it[.] The Corbeaux do not cut off their fingers and slash their flesh the same as the Gros Ventres[.] But they are greatly addicted to the an abominable crime of co The crime of sodomy[.] This I could not credit[.] But the Chief to convince me of the truth called in a Young man of that tribe. After asking him making him the usual civilities were exchanged he inquired why he did not come oftener to see him[.] Then assuming a serious air asked the Young man that told said that he was going to put him a question to which he should respond required a direct answer. Tell me plainly said he answered […] he whether the Corbeau tribe make use of animals to sodomy […] extraordinary means to satisfy a […] desires certain desires[.] Why do you put that question to me said the Young man said the Young since you Know it already; you have lived with our nation for a long time[.] Nay replied the chief the White man doubts my words and he wishes to hear Yours – say how many Species of animals added the chief have You Known Yourself. After some hesitation and counting on his fingers a little silence he held out his five fingers the fingers of one hand – and then gave the full explanation[.] But the wild animals some of these he observed […] were either dead either […] inanimate or nearly so[.] After this Young man had retired the chief remarked that his people were seldom guilty of such excesses – the few instances which came to his Knowledge occured upon war among war parties where men happened to be at a great distance from home[.]

About the beginning of august the Free men whom we had dispatched on our arrival to our Establishments on the Red River returned and informed me that Mr Alexander Henry had arrived come from Fort William[.] Concluding from the circumstances that a change had taken place in our District I became anxious for my departure[.]
