To make it look fine they sometimes throw a little water over it[.] The Corbeaux do not cut off their fingers and slash their flesh as the Gros Ventres[.] But they are addicted to an abominable crime The crime of sodomy[.] This I could not credit[.] But the Chief to convince me called in a Young man of that tribe. After he inquired why he did not come oftener to see him[.] Then assuming a serious air he was going to put him a question which a direct answer. Tell me plainly answered whether the Corbeau tribe make use of [.] Why do you put that question to me said the Young man since you Know it already; you have lived with our nation [.] Nay replied the chief the White man doubts my words and wishes to hear Yours – say how many Species have You Known Yourself. After he held out – and then gave the full explanation[.] But he were or nearly so[.] After this Young man had retired the chief remarked that his people were seldom guilty of such excesses – the few instances which came to his Knowledge occured among war parties where men happened to be at a great distance from home[.] About the beginning of august the Free men whom we had dispatched on our arrival to our Establishments on the Red River returned and informed me that Mr Alexander Henry had from Fort William[.] Concluding from circumstances that a change had taken place in our District I became anxious for my departure[.] After [11] L E G E N D : |
