The origin of the Corbeaux is accounted for in the following manner. Two Brothers of the Gros Ventres named Kegh chy-sa and Hey re ro ka who were wicked men murdered a great number of their relations and in consequence were obliged to fly for safty to the Rocky Mountains. falling in with the Tête plâlte they provided themselves with wives from their nation – who speaking a different Language from their the offspring[.] [F]rom that connection became a new tribe and a new dial which bring a mixture of the other two is understood by all them[.] The Gros Ventres call themselves E-na-sa and call the Corbeaux Kegh-chy-sa and Hey-ru-ru-ka[.] The Corbeaux call themselves Kegh chy ta and Henne no Ka – and call the Gros Ventres E-na-ta[.] Most of the Words in both Languages begin the same but end differently – as will appear from the following example
The Corbeaux tribe can not pronounce the letter r But the Gros ventre speak Corbeau equally well with their own Language[.] Both tribes dress the Same. have long hair which trail on the ground – but to make it appear long they add horse hair to their own by a cement of Gum[.] [T]hey comb only the forehead and for Combs they [10] L E G E N D : |
