Cochran, Andrew William. Eight letters to Roderick Mackenzie, 1823-1837. An electronic transcription. MFTP #0004

for which they have gathered signatures from people of all classes sorts, (except the respectable & quiet sort) many of whom no doubt have signed the call, not knowing what is to be brought forward[.]

Lord Amherst is considered a man of firmness and steadiness, — not easily ruffled or shaken, — and possessed of a sound judgment and of a considerable experiences in Civil administration[.] I have heard the former qualities attributed to him by Sir John Sherbrooke who knew him in Sicily where his Lordship was (I believe) Ambassador.

His conduct on the Chinese Mission and in India shewed him in the same character; and I hope that we shall be able to bear testimony to it. I have not heard from Lord Dalhousie since I last wrote to you[.] But there have been letters from Lady D. which speak of him as being quite well, though of course obliged to lead a very quiet life[.] Long may he continue to do so.

Hoping to have the pleasure of seeing you in July

I remain Dear Sir

very sincerely your's

AW Cochran
