Feby 1835 My Dear Sir I have just received your letter of the 20th & hasten to answer it & thank you for it, tho’ I have but a few moments to do so before the post goes out. I write from the L. Council Chambers, where Lord A. has just been, to receive Mr Papineau as Speaker & open the Session[.] I do not see that he could do otherwise than receive him, unworthy as he is, — for the contest consequent on a rejection would have led to no good result[.] Had the Govt at home supported Lord D. when he rejected him, the battle might have been fought again now with better chance of success[.] You will see in the Mercury of Saturday (if you take it) some observations on this point, under the Editorial head, which are founded on some notes furnished by me to Kemble, but he broke off in the middle of them. The Governors acceptance of Mr P. was as dry as possible, — a mere allowance & confirmation, without words of approval.
