Description:
In March-April 1807 Vivant-Denon launched a contest for a representation of Napoleon visiting the battlefield at Eylau, with specific details as to what should be included in the painting. Gros won the contest. In this work he shows the emperor amidst the carnage of the battlefield, magnanimously and mercifully ensuring all, indiscriminately of their origin. A young Lithuanian soldier pledges his loyalty to him.
